Disclaimer: It wasn’t scripted
Everyone wondering what happened between Will Smith and Chris Rock. Here is the breakdown of the event that happened at the Oscars 2022.
Actor Will Smith was appointed to the front seats along with his wife Jada Pinkett Smith. The night was going fine and the stage was taken by comedian Chris Rock.

As usual, he was doing his set and making jokes for the elite audience. While no one minds but he probably goes far. He makes a GI Jane joke on Jada. For people who didn’t get it, here’s the explanation.
In the movie GI Jane, a female lieutenant is offered the chance to join the Navy SEALs, she is adamant that she will not succumb to the pressure or expectations of those who want her to fail. In order to give her best, she separates all forms of femininity from herself. To do so, she shaves her head off.

In 2018, Jada Pinkett Smith publicly talked about suffering from alopecia. It is a common issue seen in black women which leads to hair loss. Jada admits that she loved taking care of her hair but she is surrendering to the higher power. She has since then chopped off her hair and gone bald. Hence, this topic is close to her heart.

Chris says, “Jada, I love you. GI Jane 2, can’t wait to see it.” And moves into self-appreciation about the joke being good. Jada is seen rolling her eyes at this joke and Will laughs a little.

Only after a few seconds, Will gets up and walks up to Chris. While it looks harmless until he slaps the host. The room goes eerie confused. He shouts at Chris saying, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth.”
Chris tries to move on to the next segment. But the place has already gotten awkward. Chris will not be pressing charges against Will. Will apologies to the Academy Award and fellow nominees, but not to Chris.
He won the Best Actor Award and gives a teary speech about protecting his family like his character in the movie ‘King Richard’.

Everyone gives their opinion on Will’s violent reaction. A few think it was important to stand up for a low-quality joke on actual disease. Others say violence is not acceptable no matter what.
