Don’t even consider it because shoplifting is a serious offense, but you probably already knew that. However, today we’re going to dive into some, shall we say, trade secrets. Walmart loses a staggering $3 billion annually due to shoplifting, so it should come as no surprise that the company’s top executives take every precaution to limit losses.
The “self-checkout” system, which enables customers to tally their own purchases, is being adopted by Walmart. However, that doesn’t mean you aren’t being watched just because there isn’t a Walmart employee there to scan your purchases and collect your payment.
Walmart Employee Reveals Self-Checkout Trick
In a video she posted on TikTok, Athenia Camacho, a former employee of Walmart, explained how the company works to reduce shoplifting.
According to Camacho, one way Walmart employees combat theft is that those who monitor the self-checkout stations have a handy device at their disposal. These devices enable Walmart employees to temporarily pause purchases that customers are in the process of making, requiring an employee to come over to assist because the items are unable to be scanned.
So, basically, the workers pretend that something is wrong with the self-checkout machine and then force the customer to go to a register where an actual human being is working, forcing them to empty their bags and start all over again, knowing full well that nothing is getting by the people actually ringing your items up.
Walmart employees frequently use self-checkout.
Walmart has started to offer a lot of self-checkout kiosks. While businesses can staff fewer employees per shift and accept contactless payments, customers can skip the lengthy checkout lines. Self-checkouts are not, however, viewed favorably by everyone.
Some have argued that the increased reliance on technology, such as self-checkout, is endangering people’s jobs and gradually replacing people with computers. Although self-checkout requires at least one staff member to monitor multiple independent transactions, it is unquestionably not the same as having six cashiers manning the registers. Additionally, it is not a foolproof system.

Are self-checkouts making it simpler for people to steal?
Some customers saw an opportunity to check themselves out at a discount when self-checkouts started to appear more frequently in stores. They don’t scan every item; instead, they scan only some of them or only half of them, and then they put the remaining items in their shopping bag.
A store employee is less likely to pick up on the trick because the customer is scanning and bagging their own purchases. An employee watching the self-checkout area in a busy store may find it nearly impossible to catch a shoplifter. Some people even engage in a practice known as the “banana trick,” in which they manually enter the barcode of a cheap, non-barcoded item while setting an expensive item on the scale.
Sticker swapping, which involves replacing an expensive item’s sticker with a less expensive one, is one of the banana tricks that some people use at the self-checkout. Although these strategies may have gained popularity in the early days of self-checkout, merchants have quickly caught up and discovered ways to deter people from stealing.
Zebra Technologies device
The handheld device appears to be manufactured by Zebra Technologies. The company creates and manufactures handheld inventory devices for tasks such as price checking, product location, and inventory management. While the technology does not alert an employee when something is stolen, it does allow them to see what a customer has rung up when cashing out.
The tool could prevent unjustified accusations. Everyone is aware that there are those who seek to harm others and falsely accuse them of stealing. If staff members believe a customer is stealing who isn’t, they may be less likely to make unfounded accusations thanks to the device.
Security officers and cameras at Walmart
If someone only cashes out one or two items rather than their entire basket of goods, they are probably up to no good. Although Walmart has been known to employ private security guards, most people would agree that artificial intelligence-powered security cameras serve as the biggest deterrent.e
