The Flash origination:
The bright flash was seen in the sky over the Ukrainian capital around Wednesday at 22:00 (19:00 GMT). Agencies in Kyiv initially suspected it was a Nasa satellite coming to Earth but the US space agency declared that the flash was still in orbit.
Ukrainian space officials and agencies said later the flash might have come from a meteorite.
The Ukrainian air force was sure that it was not a Russian air attack, (because it totally resembled last year’s invasion from Russia)
Due to the fear of attack, An air raid in Ukraine was activated but “air defense was not in operation”, according to the head of Kyiv’s military administration, Serhiy Popko.
The flash resembled a satellite:
M Popko who is the head of Kyiv’s military administration, later proposed that it was caused by a Nasa space satellite collapsing towards Earth, mentioning when the space agency announced that a retired 300kg spacecraft was set to re-enter the atmosphere on Wednesday.
That special satellite called RHESSI satellite, used to observe solar flares, was discharged into low Earth orbit in 2002 and was deactivated in 2018, according to Nasa,
But Rob Margetta who is a senior member of the Nasa office of Communication confessed that the satellite was still working in its orbit at the time the flash was speculated.
Further Satellite-tracking website, named Satflare indicated that RHESSI was nowhere near Ukraine at the time when the flash was observed.
Myths about the flash:
Ukrainian social media is now filled up with different theories, suggestions, and memes about what the Flash could have been and from where it could come, and a popular suggestion that people enjoy is that the Flash was probably made by the aliens, lol!
While social media is filled with multiple memes, air force officers is prohibited from using the official symbol of air force in their memes.
On Monday, one of the officers at Nasa said that it was expected most parts of the RHESSI satellite to burn up in space as it tried to re-enter the earth atmosphere. Later on, it was found that the Rhessi satellite was still in space and has not entered the earth periphery.
According to Nasa, some components can be expected to make re-entry, adding that the risk of harm to anyone on Earth was low.
But the Ukrainian air force senior person named, Yuri Ihnat, said that the flash was also seen and observed over the neighboring Belarus to the north, and according to its space agency, the flash was probably associated with a cosmic body or a meteorite that was entering to the dense layers of the atmosphere.
The city’s security:
Kyiv’s administration is the main concern about the city’s security and protection and not about the real identity of the strange flash lighting up the sky. They also set the air defense system activated in order to confront any kind of air attack from Russia or any other country.
